Awkward Bend
There is not really very much I can say about this pose, other than that it is a rather awkward one.
Ear Phones Man
This man was sitting to the tight of me on a very packed DLR (Docklands Light Railway) train. I thought he had the most interesting features and he looked deeply engrossed in whatever he was listening to. The train was way too packed and noisy for me to hear what he was hearing, but I did manage to spy on him through the gaps between other travellers on the train.
The other two sketches underneath were memory sketches I did later on in the day while waiting around for meetings.
Sweet Bird Lady
I saw this lady on the way home from the Young God’s opening night this evening. She had the sweetest little face. She reminded me of a little frightened bird. She was so tired, she kept drifting off and her head kept falling down towards her chest. It was funny, but sweet. Catching her in one position was far from easy because of this, but I persevered because I liked watching her. She had the most delicate of features and thin, wispy hair. She also looked a little sad.
I always wonder what people are thinking and feeling when I watch them and draw them. Sometimes, despite the fact that I am not able to read minds, I feel an empathy for them that makes me want to talk to them and comfort them. Sometimes, I wish I could step into their lives if only for a moment to catch a glimpse of what is really going on. It is the same feeling I get when I walk past people talking and I catch the tail end of a sentence. I always find myself wandering, what were they talking about and find myself making up little stories about them. Human beings are the most wonderfully interesting creatures.
Train People
I saw these two on spearate trains. I saw the man at the top when I was on my way home from the Young God’s exhibition this evening. I thought I was smart because he looked comfortable. He looked as though he was not getting up for a long time. I just got the tilt of his head down and he shot up and ran off the tube! He obviously forgot that he was supposed to get up soon. I therefore had to fill in the rest from memory as best I could. Memory sketching is always challenging and fun. It would be great if I could go back in time to see whether or not I got it right. But alas, no one has invented a time machine yet, and I am not smart enough to build my own.
I saw the green lady on the DLR in the morning. She was standing up looking down at her phone. She was pulling her lip down as if she was really focused on something. I always wonder what people are thinking when they make the faces they make, while they are going about their daily lives. Human beings everywhere with billions of stories and crazy things going on. Yet on the bus or on the train going to our destinations, we all seem so mute.
Bus Ladies
The lady at the top of this drawing actually made me giggle. She was reading a book, (yes, a book, not a device) and she kept on pulling the most extraordinary faces! It was difficult to catch her at a moment when her face was still. She was very expressive and obviously reacting w=to whatever it was that she was reading. Very interesting to watch.
The young lady underneath was staring wistfully out of the window. I think she noticed what I was doing after a short while. Luckily, she smiled sweetly and did not question me lol. I wonder what she was thinking about.
Cold People
On the rare occasion when I actually leave the house and use public transport, I like to secretly sketch people. I sit or stand and silently watch for good subjects.
I am becoming rather good at spotting those who are likely to stay still long enough for me to sketch them. Sleepers, readers and mobile device users are the best subjects. Actually, I would argue that mobile device users are sometimes better than sleepers. They get hypnotised for ages. Good for me!
The people in this sketch were visibly very cold. Especially the woman. She was dozing off and burying her chin into her coat. It was actually very cute to see.
