Enam Gbewonyo, Art Advice. Art Discussion
A short video of the artist giving advice to her younger self, followed by giving career advice to a young artist just starting out today. This is a short clip taken from the full Art Success video which can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/MiEjhJm6_hM
Enam Gbewonyo is a Multimedia Textile Artist who merges textile and surface pattern techniques with traditional painting practises. Enam graduated from Bradford College of Art & Design as a Knitted Textile Designer in 2001. Following a career spanning six years as a womenswear and knitwear designer in New York, Enam returned to the UK fuelled with the aspiration to kick-start her life as an artist.
The body of works Enam produces explores the ideas of movement and freedom in the human body as well as in society and relates these themes to their more simple, beautiful expressions in nature. With her works Enam also endeavours to promote the use of hand crafting practices. By using embroidery, knitting, wirework, surface pattern and painting techniques Enam disparages society’s increasing dependence on technology and consumerism.
Enam has exhibited in some premier venues worldwide including; Adam Street Private Member’s Club, Chelsea Old Town Hall, the Bargehouse OXO Tower, Times Square in New York, LA and Toronto. Enam’s work has also featured in Tiger Lilly’s music video “Affair” a dark and seductive visual befitting of Enam’s ‘Sugar and Spice’ collection.
Alongside exhibiting Enam is fast becoming an avid curator, her first show being WELOVELIKE the Adam Street exhibition. The exhibition highlighted the work of three other artists as well as Enam’s. She has since co-curated the 2015 African and African-Caribbean Design Diaspora (AACDD) Festival as well as an exclusive exhibition for TEDxEuston 2015 tailored to their Vision to Reality theme. In early 2015 Enam also founded the Black British Female Artist (BBFA) collective in an effort to provide platforms for eight of the best female emerging artists of the Diaspora to exhibit.
