Working Together – The Opportunities + Challenges of Artist Collectives: A panel discussion with Adelaide Damoa, Anna McNay, Paul Clifford + Susan J Mumford

You hear a lot about the changing art world. How exactly are artists working together to create opportunities and what are the challenges?

Our monthly talk series at Cass Art will address the value of artist collectives: What do they offer? How might joining an artist collective help move your practice and career forwards? How can artists who are part of collectives also benefit galleries with whom they work? Can you be ambitious within a supportive community (or will it hold you back)? How will this help you manage the practical, physical and emotional demands of being an art professional in the 21^st Century?

Anna McNay, Adelaide Damoah and Paul Clifford will be in conversation with Be Smart About Art Founder, entrepreneur Susan J Mumford.

In the talk, we’ll discuss the following points and more:

> Understanding different models for artist collectives, as introduced by panelists

> Identifying reasons that you might join a collective, from rejuvenating your creative / personal practice to developing professionally

> Building confidence and ambition by learning from a professional community of peers

> Developing your ideas by receiving feedback from similar professionals working in different ways

> Combating loneliness or isolation through connection with like-minded peers

> Understanding the benefits and pitfalls of regular meet ups (and how to access if members are busy or located in differing geographical areas)

> Developing accountability systems to set and achieve goals + a regular opportunity to present and discuss your art practice (impacting on your ability to speak and write confidently)

> Communicating on an ongoing basis with collective peers, in a confidential manner, using online means (sharing opportunities, providing feedback, brainstorming, etc)

> Getting practical guidance on exhibiting, pricing, promoting work, writing a press release, succeeding with social media, and more

> Participating in group shows (including how this can help you to keep creating cohesive bodies of work)

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

ADELAIDE DAMOAH’s practice currently involves using her body to paint or print. She works with photographs and text later in the creation of the work. This new direction was inspired by a desire to subvert Yves Klein’s “Anthropemetrie’s” series. Damoah engages in live performances of the first part of her creative process – body printing and writing.

Damoah’s main influences are Judy Chicago, Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Hammons, Yves Klein, Sokari Douglas Camp and Rachel Ara. Solo exhibitions to date include This is Us, Supermodels, Black Lipstick, and an exhibition for registered charity, the National Centre for Domestic Violence.

ANNA MCNAY

Anna McNay is Assistant Editor at Art Quarterly (Art Fund) and a freelance writer and editor.

She comes from an academic background, as a doctoral candidate, tutor, and lecturer in German and Linguistics at the University of Oxford, and an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow at the Humboldt University in Berlin.

In 2011, returning to study part-time for an MA in History of Art at Birkbeck, University of London, she began writing reviews for the online art journal Studio International, for whom she continues to write and present today. She began work with Art Quarterly in March 2017, previously being Deputy Editor for State mediaand Arts Editor for DIVA magazine. She also writes catalogue essays, reviews, interviews and profiles for various online and print publications, including Photomonitor, RA Magazine, Platea, Elephant, the Mail on Sunday and the Guardian. Some of her writing can be found in her blog archive.

Anna is a member of the NUJ, WiJ and AICA, and is NCTJ certified.

PAUL CLIFFORD

Paul Clifford’s photography gives us new ways of looking at the world around us by highlighting unexpectedly interesting views of the apparently mundane.

‘I want to show the simple and sometimes sublime pleasures that can be had by taking a slower and more considered look at everyday scenery and situations. I hope to create something new that can feel both interesting and beautiful, mysterious and familiar.’

Paul started cataloguing his images in 1993, a collection that now runs into the thousands. In 2015 the catalogue moved to Instagram, where Paul has posted a new image every single day since. His work is regularly featured on numerous art photography hubs.

SUSAN J MUMFORD

A game-changer in the 21st Century art world, Susan’s an entrepreneur, mentor, speaker, moderator and author. Her first foray into supporting industry professionals was in the form of the Association of Women Art Dealers (AWAD), which she established in 2010 while running a gallery in Soho, London. This was followed by the launch of Be Smart About Art, an online-accessible professional development platform that helps creative professionals thrive in a changing world. In late 2015, her first book was published in the name of BSAA’s motto: `’Art is your life. Make it your living.” While based in London, Susan spends notable periods around the UK and also in the USA and Continental Europe, delivering workshops and keynotes, mentoring creative professionals, facilitating panel discussions, judging art prizes and more.

ARTIST INTERVIEW: ADELAIDE DAMOAH

Adelaide Damoah is a British artist of Ghanaian descent whose earlier work combined African and Western influences while highlighting social issues. A founding member of the BBFA (Black British Female Artists Collective), her current practice involves using her body as a “living paintbrush” to paint or print onto various surfaces. We caught up with Adelaide to find out more about her practice…

Hi Adelaide, central to your practice is the use of your body as a ‘living paintbrush’. Tell us about your choice of paint.

I love the texture, look and feel of oil paint, so at first, I used just that. Initially, I used only permanent alizarin crimson by Winsor and Newton or Michael Harding. I chose this colour because I wanted to get something that reminded me of tissue and blood and I felt that this colour was most consistent in getting across the feeling that I wanted. It’s probably not sensible to use oil paint on skin! As a consequence, I now use water mixable oil paint by Winsor and Newton. It’s much easier to wash off and less irritating to the skin. I adore the vibrancy of Michael Harding alizarin crimson too and I have some of his oils.

For my last performance I used Winsor and Newton Artisan water mixable ultramarine blue. It looked very shiny, beautiful and dark against my skin. Against the white canvas it was a perfect shade of ultramarine. I wanted something as close to Yves Klein’s blue as possible.
